Title: Diesel motor mechanic

A heavy vehicle motor mechanic repairs, maintains and tests heavy vehicles, other engines and related mechanical components. Diesel motor mechanics service, repair and overhaul the mechanical parts of motor vehicles such as the engine, the transmission (clutch, gear box and differential), and the suspension systems (springs, steering, brakes, wheels and tyres). Heavy vehicle motor mechanics may have to work in country areas when repairing agricultural, earthmoving and heavy transport machinery.

Tasks Include:

     Carry out diagnostic procedures.

     Service or repair light or heavy vehicles, motorcycles, outdoor power equipment in a manner that ensures the protection of the environment.

     Apply basic safety and emergency procedures to maintain a safe workplace for staff, customers and others.

     Decide what needs to be done to carry out an inspection and repair of an engine forced induction system.

     Inspect engines and fix any problems you find.

     Overhaul diesel fuel injection systems.

     Repair and replace emission control systems.

     Repair diesel fuel systems.

     Inspect engines in heavy vehicles and fix any problems you find.

     Select, safely use and maintain workplace tooling and equipment.

     Use and maintain measuring equipment.

     Repair the parts in an exhaust system.

     Inspect air and liquid cooling systems and fix any problems you find.

     Carry out a service on a diesel fuel injection systems.

     Carry out fault diagnosis and repair of air and liquid cooling systems.

     Inspect engines and fix any problems you find.

     Remove and install engine assemblies.

     Select and use bearings, seals, gaskets, sealants and adhesives.

     Service and repair electronic compression ignition engine management systems.

     Carry out soldering of electrical wiring/circuits.

     Make and repair wiring harness/looms.

     Carry out repairs to single electrical circuits.

     Service, remove, replace and charge car batteries.

     Communicate effectively in the workplace.

     Apply basic automotive troubleshooting processes.

     Perform routine gas metal arc welding.

     Operate machine to produce parts or tools, read and interpret diagrams.

     Identify safe equipment for welding for example, gloves, overalls, goggles and hats.

     Apply basic First Aid.
